BIO
Luana Cloșcă (b. 2003, Romania), is a contemporary artist based between Cluj-Napoca and Berlin. She is currently studying painting at the Universität der Künste Berlin under the guidance of David Schutter.
Who has the freedom to move and who is confined to their place? Are we sometimes drawn to the vigorousness of violence, because it makes us feel uncomfortable in our desire to deconstruct what we’re haunted by? Creating tensions between the male nude and genderless holographic figures (and rarely female ones, which makes us inevitably think of who’s behind the brush), Luana Cloșcă’s paintings question power structures, capturing instances of brutality and emphasizing the layered process in which it becomes more subtle and intelligent in its meanderings, as we, both as perpetrators and victims, create new territories for it to unfold. A feeling of both being on the run and being intact floats in these images; the landscape is simplified, having greens and browns as earth and blues and grays as sky, the two dimensions being brought together by the body, which functions both as object of desire and point of conflict. What happens with falling athletic bodies, with being continually chased, with touches that distort the landscape, with the feeling that our questions boomerang back to us, because everything is part of this systemic violence? What do we feel when we are caught between passivity and action, what roles do blurriness and sensuality play into dynamics of displacement and amputation? Psychological turmoil meets a deep silence in Luana’s topographies, „the other” mirroring innermost beliefs about inescapable structures, caught on the thin border between pain and pleasure, progressing from utter innocence to revelatory malice. Luana Closca was born in 2003 in Romania and currently lives and works between Cluj-Napoca and Berlin.
